The Pros and Cons of DIY vs. Professional Home Renovations
Some people looking at South Bend homes for sale want something that meets all their needs. Others prefer something they can fix up themselves, building and renovating to their exact specifications. Should you attempt those renovations yourself or hire a professional to take care of them? It depends on several factors, including your budget, your experience, and the extent of the work you want done. Here are some pros and cons of DIY vs. professional home renovations.
- Pro: It's Cheaper. Contractors are expensive. You can get quotes to find one within your budget, but quality work will cost a fair amount of money. On a DIY job, however, you only pay for parts. Since the labor is all yours, you can have it for free. All you need is the time and skill to complete the job.
- Con: Quality. Even if you're fairly experienced with tools and building, unless you're a professional contractor yourself, the quality of the job probably won't be as good with DIY as if you hire someone else. It's true that the pride of workmanship can make up for a few mistakes and imperfections in the finished product and even add personality to it. However, some mistakes will cost you more in the long run. If you mess up the wrong thing, it can cause more damage, forcing you to call a contractor anyway and leaving you with a higher bill than if you'd simply hired them to do the work in the first place.
- Pro: Flexibility. How long will your renovations take? What parts of your home will be out of commission during that time? A contractor will give you a timeline for completion, but things often take longer than that, particularly on more extensive work, and renovations are an inconvenience for you and your family during that time. When you do the job yourself, you can work around your schedule, doing things when you have the time, and they will cause the least hassle.
- Con: Time. Especially if you're balancing renovations with a full-time job, the work will take a lot longer if you do the job yourself. Even with delays, a professional can complete most jobs in a few days or weeks. If you're only doing the work on your days off, it can take months or longer.
- Pro: Learning a New Skill. DIY projects are an opportunity to learn by doing. If you have basic skills with tools, you can look up step-by-step instructions and video tutorials for the jobs you plan on doing. It may take some practice, but you'll get better as you go, and by the time the work is completed, you'll have gained new experience in building, fixing, etc. Not only does this provide a sense of accomplishment, but it will also come in handy for repairing things around the house.
- Con: Potential Danger. Learning as you go is great, but the less experience you have, the more risk there is. Mistakes can not only cause damage, but injury. Only attempt a DIY job if you know what you're doing, and don't be afraid to ask for help from someone more experienced. And anything to do with your plumbing or electrical system, as well as roofing or HVAC installation, should only be done by a trained and licensed professional.
