If you've never tried picnicking before, now is the perfect time to pack a lunch and bring your family to these South Bend picnic spots.

If you love being outdoors, National Picnic Day allows you to get outside for a picnic and some of your favorite outdoor activities. Whether you prefer a family picnic, outdoor activities with the kids, or just meeting up with friends, our real estate agents can suggest some great scenic South Bend parks where you can have a wonderful day.

  • Pinhook Park
    Pinhook Park and Community Center offers year-round activities for people of all ages. In addition to picnic tables, a playground for the kids, restroom facilities, and a community recreation center, there is also a beautiful lake and lagoon, fishing area, and special park activities. On Saturday, May 20th from 10 am-12 pm, Pinhood Park is hosting Nature Cat Day, a free event that includes a leaf rubbing station, a scavenger hunt, and a place to make your own trail mix. Kids will be able to can catch an appearance of Nature Cat and Spark during the activities.

  • Potawatomi Park
    Potawatomi Park is one of South Bend's most active parks because it's filled with great amenities and activities for adults and kids. There are two covered pavilions with picnic tables and large grills you can rent by the day for special events, as well as park trails and various activities, including:
    • Potawatomi Concert Series – June 4th through September 24th
    • Potawatomi Conservatory – a waterfall, gardens, and tropical plants
    • Potawatomi Pool – a wading pool, spray feature, and a 35-foot slide
    • Potawatomi Zoo – Indiana's oldest zoo
    • Splash Pad – large playground with water features and exercise track

  • River Manor Park
    River Manor Park is a smaller neighborhood park that features a playground for the kids, picnic benches and grills, a trail with exercise features, and athletic courts for basketball, tennis, and pickleball. Although this park is smaller and quieter than Potawatomi Park and Rum Village Park, there is plenty to do here. You can enjoy a family picnic on the grass, watch the kids play on the playground, or join in some pickup games on the basketball court.

  • Rum Village Park
    Rum Village Park is a nature lover's dream where you can explore wonderful park activities for the entire family. Within 160 acres of rolling woodlands, you can enjoy seeing amphibians, deer, foxes, reptiles, and numerous species of beautiful birds, including nesting owls, woodpeckers, and warblers. You can also enjoy the park activities, which include the following:
    • Dog Park – separate areas for small and large dogs
    • Disc Golf – free 18-hole course with mature trees
    • Nature Center – exhibit area, nature games, and wooded trails
    • Hiking trails – 5 miles of beginner, intermediate, and advanced trails
    • Mountain bike trails – 3 miles of winding trails
    • Edge Adventure Aerial Park – treetop adventure trails with obstacles and zip lines

  • St. Patrick's County Park
    St. Patrick's County Park offers wooded trails, lakes and ponds, and views of the St. Joseph River nestled in 398 acres of beautiful scenery. There are canoe rentals, family picnic sites, playgrounds for the kids, hiking trails, a public access boat ramp for the St. Joseph River, and cross-country ski trails during the winter. If you're looking for South Bend homes for sale, this park warrants a visit to take advantage of some unique features such as the Live Bald Eagle Cam, the Freedom Memorial, the Indiana Birding Trail, and the Red Barn, one of the largest wooden barns in the county.
